The Herd hit four home runs in the first three innings and didn't bother to look back from then on, silencing the Chiefs 8-1.
Aaron Herr wasted no time blasting his fifth homer of the season with two outs off of Davis Romero. Herr's homer brought in Danny Sandoval to put the Bisons up 2-0 early in the game.
In the top of the second they did not want to led up, as Ryan Mulhern belted a solo shot on the second pitch of the inning. Jason Tyner would soon reach on an infield grounder to the short stop, and then steal second. Josh Barfield drove in Tyner with two outs on a ground ball up the middle.
The Bisons might have been on the road but they did not get away from the wet weather in Upstate New York. Rains came down in Syracuse forcing the postponement of the Bisons vs. Syracuse Cheifs game for Wednesday May 8.
It was small-ball that took care of business for the Herd in their first victory over the Syracuse Chiefs this season, getting a productive start from Jeremy Sowers in the 6-3 win.
Manager Torey Lovullo couldn't have asked for a better start out of Sowers, who provided the Bisons with seven scoreless innings in his second win of the season. Sowers allowed only three hits and struck out two batters.
Edward Mujica relieved Sowers in the 8th inning, not allowing a hit. Then, Reid Santos entered in the 9th to seal the deal after allowing three runs on five hits.
The Cleveland Indians today announced that they have signed OF Bronson Sardinha to a minor league contract. He will report to the Buffalo Bisons in the next couple of days.
The Tribe also recalled OF Ben Francisco from the Bisons today. To make roster room, the Indians designated OF Jason Michaels for assignment.
The Chiefs had plenty of hits to work with Monday night and finally strung enough together to defeat the Bisons for the fifth time this season.
Syracuse had 14 singles, three of which came in the 10th inning of a 3-2 victory over the Herd from Alliance Bank Stadium. Buffalo is now 0-5 on the season against their Thruway-rival.
Catcher Curtis Thigpen had the game-winner. His single off Bubbie Buzachero (1-1) with two outs in the bottom of the 10th scored former-Bison Hector Luna. Brad Snyder charged the ball hard from centerfield, but his throw to the plate was late and Syracuse walked off with the win.
In most games, victory is about the team that makes the most out of their opportunities. That's exactly what the Bisons did on Sunday to collect their fifth and sixth wins in the last eight days.
The Herd jumped on a pair of Knights' fielding miscues to complete a doubleheader sweep of Charlotte from Dunn Tire Park. Both contests were tied late, but Buffalo found a way to pull out each game.
In game one, a Fernando Cortez's throwing error opened the door to a two-run rally for the Bisons as they won 6-4. Rob Bell's error in the night cap jumped started the Herd to a 1-0 victory. Both miscues came while the respective games were tied.
The funny thing, looking back, is that they almost started the season 0-1.
Yeah, they were down 3-2 in the top of the ninth in Las Vegas on April 3 in their first game of season. And when the rally started, nobody could have imagined what it would become. Single, hit batsman, single, single, groundout and a Bobby Wilson single that put the cherry on top. Just like that, four runs and they had a 6-3 lead that would be the final score.
The Buffalo Bisons today announced that former Bisons outfielder Dave Clark and Bisons manager Brian Graham have been elected to the Buffalo Baseball Hall of Fame. Clark and Graham will become the 76th and 77th members of the Hall of Fame on Saturday, August 3 in pre-game ceremonies as part of the Buffalo Baseball Heritage Day. The Bisons face Syracuse at 1:05 p.m.
The pre-game festivities will also include the induction of former Bisons great Luke Easter into the International League Hall of Fame. Members of the Easter family will be on hand to accept the award for their late father.
In a predictable decision Saturday, Cliff Lee was named the American League’s pitcher of the month.
Lee, off to arguably the fastest start of any pitcher in the majors, has won his first five starts, while posting a microscopic 0.96 ERA to lead the big leagues. The left-hander allowed just one run through his first four outings, beginning a scoreless innings streak that ended at 27 Wednesday in an 8-3 victory over the Mariners.
“It’s nice, but I’m more concerned with my team winning games,” Lee said of receiving the award. “We’ve got a long ways to go.
Almost everyone has had that grandfather-type in their life. You know, that older male to identify with and look up to.
Not many can say that legendary Major League Baseball skipper Whitey Herzog was that figure, though. Perhaps that’s why when Aaron Herr talks about the time he spent as an adolescent in the St. Louis Cardinals clubhouse he gets a huge smile on his face.
“He always let me do whatever I wanted,” Herr said of Herzog. “I even had my own locker.”
Joe Winkelsas’ career in professional baseball has spanned 13 years and 16 teams. He’s endured trauma and triumph, overcome marijuana addiction, survived injuries and surgeries, trips through the independent leagues and a seven-year wait to get back to the majors. He even retired a couple of times.
As first chronicled by The News two years ago, Winkelsas’ rise from city of Buffalo garbage hauler to the Milwaukee Brewers bullpen in the summer of 2006 became fodder across the Internet and in virtually every major baseball notes column.
But the eight-pitch, 1-2-3 ninth inning of relief the Bishop Timon-St. Jude product threw late Friday night for the Charlotte Knights certainly stands as one of his signature career moments.
Saturday May 3 Bisons vs. Charlotte Knights game was rained out. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader starting at 1pm tomorrow May 4. Anyone holding a ticket for today's game can turn it in at the Dunn Tire Park box office for any future game except special events like the July 3rd game.
Time Warner Cable’s SportsNet, Channel 13, over the next two months starting with today’s game with Charlotte, the Triple-A baseball club and the cable company announced Friday.
Five of the 12 games will be carried live — today’s 1 p. m. game will be shown on tape delay at 7 — and four will be road games. TWC plans to add more live games later in the season.
Buffalo Bisons first baseman Jordan Brown, one of the team's most potent hitters for the first month of the season, was put on the disabled list Friday with a knee injury and replaced on the Herd's roster by former Cleveland Indians No. 1 draft pick Michael Aubrey.
Brown was batting .271 in 25 games for the Bisons with an International League-leading 11 doubles and 10 RBIs. He first injured his knee Sunday against Pawtucket and aggravated it during Thursday's win over Charlotte in Dunn Tire Park.

Notes: Designed by famed HOK architects, this downtown stadium, was built with an eye toward Major League Baseball expansion once Buffalo hoped to secure a franchise. The 46 million dollar Pilot Field was renamed North AmeriCare Park in July of 1995 when the naming rights were sold to a regional HMO. For the first few months of the 1995 season the stadium was simply "The Ballpark in Downtown Buffalo". Dunn Tire, a regional tire retailer, acquired the naming rights in 1999. This stadium replaced the nearby decaying War Memorial Stadium (Photos).

Bison History
The team originally known as the Buffalo Bisons actually dates to a major league club, the Buffalo Bisons of the National League (1879-85). In 1886, the Bisons moved into minor league baseball as members of the original International League.
This franchise continued in the IL (known as the Eastern League from 1891-1911) through June 11, 1970, when it transferred to Winnipeg, Manitoba. After six seasons in the Eastern League, the Bisons joined the Triple-A ranks in 1985, joining the American Association when the Wichita Aeros franchise rights were transferred to Buffalo.
Before the 1997 season the Bisons announced it would be their last in the American Association, as they would be switching to the International League for the 1998 season. This gave Triple A baseball a chance to realign and the American Association folded. Joining Buffalo in the IL was Indianapolis and Louisville. The remaining AA teams joined the PCL.
